Stipa is also called needle grass, spear grass, and feather grass. They are clump forming, cool season grasses. They have long awns, which is the source of their common names. The foliage usually forms a mound, with the flower stalks being upright. They prefer full sun, and low humidity, with well drained soil. They do well in containers.
